About Liana

My photo
Brisbane, Australia
My studio is located in Brisbane, Australia. For the past 10 years I’ve been enjoying creating jewellery designs from an array of mundane materials. Tupperware and knitting needles have remained a firm favourite. My designs have been published numerous times, graced the shelves of many wonderful galleries and stores and been worn by those whose aren’t afraid of colour and attention. All of which I am very grateful for. For several years I’ve also been fortunate enough to work with many businesses as a coach and workshop facilitator.

Tupperware Nana

I guess Tupperware and nanas really do go together.

I had a nice little surprise yesterday. Mel Robson (see below) popped in to MoB (to deliver more of her gorgeous ceramics) and asked if I would like two garbage bags full of her nana's old Tupperware.

Yes please!!

Am I Green? Because I Really Thought I Was Pink!

I was given a nice little profile on a Green blog recently. That was great, thank you, but I wondered if I belonged there. Am I Green? Do I need to think I am for others to? Guess not.

As much as I don't really want to be labelled as Recycle (plastic) Girl I can't deny that I seem to have an affinity with recycled materials and am drawn to them. I really can't go past a Vinnies without going in. There may be hidden treasures just waiting for me.

I do know that you need to define yourself or otherwise others will, but I don't mind feeling that I don't have to control everything. Anyway green is my favourite colour!

Kitchen Tidy Reward

No problem with using domestic materials in my designs but a real problem with domestic chores. Maybe if I slice up all those pesky Tupperware containers I'll never have to wash one up.

Anyway I had a moment of madness over the weekend and tidied my kitchen (well, maybe don't look in those cupboards) and to reward myself for all my hard work I opening my Pru Morrison (see earlier post) spoons and hung them up in my newly cleaned kitchen. I've had these precious pieces still wrapped up and tucked away in my draw since I purchased them before Xmas, waiting until such a worthy occasion.

Self Confessed Sydney Snob

Born and bred in Sydney, and proud of it!

Spending most of my adult life there my attitude regarding the rest of Australia was that there really only was Sydney and Melbourne, and the rest of the states were of mild interest at best. I lived in Sydney and thought the only other place I would want to live was Melbourne. As long as I lived in Sydney and visited Melbourne at least once a year, I was happy. I had absolutely no interest in even visiting Brisbane - maybe I'd like to go to Sea World one day, and childhood holidays at Surfers Paradise were fun (I know not Brisbane - but close!), but that was it.

Anyway I reluctantly moved to Brisbane several years ago (partner's job) and have been constantly amazed since by the truckloads of fabulously talented people - artists, craftspeople, designers - wherever category that you want to put them in that live and work here. Why didn't I know about them ( or care)?

Standing on the other side of the fence now I don't want to always look to Sydney and Melbourne (and other fabulous states) and compare. There is no reason that things can't happen here because the talent sure isn't lacking. I think we just need to get together a bit more, join forces and help eachother. Remember there is power in numbers and that has to be good for everyone.

Buzz Buzz

Busily finishing off a few cute little earrings, made from knitting needles, Tupperware, coat hangers and plastic toys, to send off to The Hive gallery in Canberra.

I wasn't sure about approaching this particular gallery at first as I didn't know much about it and having a stockist in Canberra wasn't a high priority. When I took a good look at the website I changed my mind - all the lolly colours felt like a match to me and I wanted to be a part of it. When I contacted the lovely Jenny it turns out she was trying to contact me also.

I guess that I'm not going to fit everywhere and that's O.K and it is just going to take some time to work out the places that I really do. Anyway the journey should be an interesting one.

24hr Shop Till You Drop

I love to shop online! It wasn't too long ago that the thought of typing in my credit card details caused me to break out in a cold sweat. Now buying online seems as natural as any offline shopping that I do. It is just so damn convenient.

So if I've taken to the online hypermarket my feeling is that countless others have too, or are getting there. So this has led me to think about selling my work online. Of course there is selling through my website (which will happen soonish) but perhaps also through other sites . Just as I sell from that one bricks and mortar gallery why not through more than one virtual gallery/stores?

I do like the look of Georgie Love (click title link) which is a Melbourne focused online store which stocks an array of funky handcrafted goods. I have my eye on bunny toys by Beck Wheeler and vintage postcard wallets by Gaye Abandon.

Sale time

I was super busy this week preparing for our studio sale (see below).

I had some fun making cute Jack & Jill bobby pins specially for the sale. Sometimes in amongst all the deadlines and general life chaos I forget how enjoyable all this really can be. I remembered this week!

MoB Workspace

I am a blog convert. I've found it a great way to open up in a way that isn't always appropriate for a business website.

In this spirit of sharing and opening up the girls at MoB Workspace (me included) have started up our own blog. As a member myself (coming late to the group) I've found it a little mysterious at times - well no longer.............click the link and check it out for yourself........

Counter Attack

I spent a fun filled night sorting out vintage ( overused term but still better than old) counters into pairs. This is just the sort of thing to do in front of the T.V!

Although I felt I wanted to move away from recycled materials this year I seem to keep coming back to them. I guess I'll just incorporate new and old plastics together and allow my work to evolve in its own time (with some guidance). Coming to this conclusion has freed me up and I now feel that I can enjoy the journey again rather than focusing so much on the final outcome.
