About Liana

My photo
Brisbane, Australia
My studio is located in Brisbane, Australia. For the past 10 years I’ve been enjoying creating jewellery designs from an array of mundane materials. Tupperware and knitting needles have remained a firm favourite. My designs have been published numerous times, graced the shelves of many wonderful galleries and stores and been worn by those whose aren’t afraid of colour and attention. All of which I am very grateful for. For several years I’ve also been fortunate enough to work with many businesses as a coach and workshop facilitator.

WOW!!!!!

Saturday's Umbrella Collective show was FANTASTIC! It ran without a hitch thanks to master organiser Kylie Johnson. I'm really not sure what the best part of the day was?

Was it being with my friends and fellow crafters?
Was it meeting so many lovely people who were familiar with my work?
Was it the chance I had to chat and meet new people?
Was it the beautiful location - gorgeous leafy surrounds a hop, skip and a jump from the city?
Was it the fabulous family and friends who helped out so much on the day?
Was it my own collection of goodies I had acquired at the end of the day?

When I was at the Rock's markets potential customers would often say, "do I really need it?" and I would say "no, although it is important to have things that bring you joy and make you happy and something beautiful, original and handmade can do that". Saying that, I expect there was lots of joy spread around last Saturday.

"I thought of you when I saw this."

I'd have to say that a rather lovely side effect of being so focused on one particular material, namely plastic, is that people often think of you when they see some.

Thank you to all the special people who have helped and supported me by collecting and sending me lots of plastic goodness.

Bangles For Giants

I do not make bangles for giants. I have never made bangles for giants. I did make one for a man - he was tall - but still, not a giant.

Let me explain - following a write-up in last weekend's Age newspaper it has been kindly pointed out to me by two Melbourne folk, Rory and Vanessa, that "180mm inner diameter" seemed at tad big for the Knitwit bangles they wished to purchase. I did in fact mean to write circumference. I have now changed the description to the more reasonable 60mm (approx) inner diameter.

All The Things I Should Have Said By Now

It is a bit of a balancing act right now trying to fulfil all my Xmas commitments. I am lucky and grateful to have so many! Although it has meant I've fallen behind in my blogging duties and need to mention a few people and things right now....

* Thank you to Jenny from The Hive from all your hard work and publicity generate from my Bloom exhibition. Selected floral pieces will be available here until Xmas.

* New stockist - Punch Gallery in Balmain, Sydney. I have been popping into this gallery for 10ish years so am very happy to be part of it.

* New stockist - Stop Laughing This Is Serious Gallery in Blackheath, The Blue Mountains. Love, Love, love the mountains - I may retire there one day...

* Thank you to Stella- the best designer /artist/illustrator ever! (Her image is pictured above) for making me look so good by designing my new stationery. I now have compliments slips so I can pop a note in with my orders! Yay!

* A belated mention of the recent exhibition, Round, by jewellers Vicki Mason & Mark Vaarwerk. These are two of my favourite plastic people.

Well, that's a few for now...

Bangle Fever

I feel like I have been making bangles non-stop for months on end. All I can see right now is knitting needles transforming into bangles. I can't get them out of my mind!

I seriously need a break - well just a short one perhaps. So I'm stopping right now grabbing a beer and watching The Bold and the Beautiful. It is close enough to beer time and I expect a juicy episode will help clear my mind and calm me down - at least until tomorrow.

I hope Ridge sings.

More Invites Please!

Our little bench at MoB has been overflowing with invites since October. We have all be in so many shows since then. Really I'm not complaining as the paper invite is a very important thing. I'm all for the electronic version but sometimes you just want something pretty to stick to the fridge.

There have been a few upcoming shows that haven't had the paper invite or even a decent electronic version. Which is a bit sad after you've put all the hard work into creating new and special designs. Luckily our resident photoShop whiz Miss Wrecker has designed some for us (pictured above). Thanks Miss Wrecker - I have a perfectly nautical bangle coming your way.

Some of my new and special pieces can be purchased at:

Cherish - opens this Thursday.

Glam-r-us - opens Thursday 30 November

Collect

I just realised that the Collect store opens today. The store formally located at The Rocks, Sydney has now moved into their new location at Surry Hills. I am a bit excited about stocking them since Surry Hills is just about my most favourite place.

It was the place I started hanging out with friends since I was a teenager. I lived in a couple of different terrace houses in years gone by and was a regular at my favourite haunts, like the Hopetoun , the Trade Union Club, the Cricketers Arms, Clock Hotel (when they had pool tables), Shakespeare Hotel and No Names restaurant. I guess it is also special since I was one of those babies born at the hospital that has now transformed into Object Gallery.

Surry Hills has had a bit of a makeover since my days as a regular and I guess that is a good thing if I hope to sell work there. Judging by my list of favourite places I wasn't spending much time shopping, unless you count the necessary trips to Woolies on Crown St.

Plastic Debris

mod*mom kindly pointed me in the direction of this fabulous work featured on MoCo Loco

UK designer/artist Stuart Haygarth collects large quantities of objects and then assembles them "in a way that transforms their meaning" to give "banal and overlooked objects a new significance". His designs generally appear to be made from plastics. This makes sense due to the colour range and lightness of the material which lends itself so well to large scale dramatic projects like the chandelier, pictured above.

I have a few ideas for some largish plasticy projects myself. Perhaps I'll fit one or so of these into the coming year...

I'm A Tupperware Lady - Again!

I've threatened to dress up as a Tupperware Lady for this. As I have known hundreds ot T.L's during my mother's years as a T.L I expect no further research will be required.

What The Blogger Said

A press release is all about agenda. Truth be told a blogger can have plenty of that too. Although now we at least have the opportunity to easily access the views of real people and weigh things up for ourselves. Thank you bloggers everywhere.

One example below.
