Lately I've been working on some new designs that incorporate vintage rhinestones. These were salvaged from my Uncle's jewellery wholesale business and handed down to me. The rhinestones were first salvaged by my Uncle, from his Uncle's Sydney jewellery business. I guess that makes me the third generation to use these beautiful crystal rhinestones in our jewellery making.

What If I Didn't Make Things Anymore?

It is time for a change!

I've come to the point where I realise I need to make some changes. I expect this happens to lots of us. You feel like you have done it all before (and maybe lots of other people are now doing it too). Or you need to make changes simply to develop your career.

I care about learning. So when I feel I have learnt something, I want to learn something new. I am at that point of wanting to learn something new.

There are new challenges ahead. New way of doing business and new ways to be creative. I feel excited about this. I want to move in some of these new directions. In order for new beginning to happen something has to end. That is just the way it is. As you know letting go is hard, and scary. But if you want something new to happen I think you have to. I think I have to.

The details of my 'new directions' are still a little hazy. I'm not exactly sure what will end and what will begin? Mostly this won't happen until next year, but I am thinking about it now. I'm thinking about it a lot.

Japan Bits - Earrings

It does feel a little like I just got back from participating in the Sydney Finders Keepers market, and now it is already time to do the Brisbane market - this weekend! I only do a few quality markets a year, so I am once again really looking forward to it.

Sydney Finders Keepers Market

I'm off to Sydney next month to participate in the Finders Keepers market. This will be the first time I've sold my jewellery at a market in Sydney. Besides the 10pm finish on Friday night (I am such a Nana so this is way past my usual bedtime) I'm really looking forward to it. I'm looking forward to meeting new people and seeing something new. Actually I'm hoping to see lots of new and interesting designers and makers.

As well as a large selection of my classic pieces, there will be brand new never seen before and one of a kind designs. Plus there will be exclusive market only specials. If you are in Sydney I hope you'll come by and say hi!

The next Sydney Finders Keepers markets will be Autumn/Winter 2010 held on the 7th and 8th May 2010. The markets will be held at Sydney's best contemporary art centre CarriageWorks in Sydney’s Inner West.

The markets brings together new emerging and contemporary independent artists and designers of original and high creative standards across 80 stalls. Our aim is to always introduce new designers and new product to cater for a wide range of our customers and supporters. Every market event is completely unique and we always introduce new designers and rotate existing stallholders from previous events, as well as featuring local independent musicians and always including other special features!

The markets are FREE entry for all and feature live music, with the CarriageWorks cafe and bar open all day.

The next markets are:
Friday 7th May from 6pm – 10pm

as the coordinator for Queensland. I was offered the job a couple of week ago and simply couldn't refuse. As much as I may grumble about being busy I really do love to be. Mr Vaarwerk Did His Homework

Oh I wish I could have made it Mark Vaarwerk's Homework show at the new Gaffa gallery. It would have been great to see Mark's collection and give him some support by attending. It would have also been a treat to check out the new gallery. I will get myself to Gaffa later this year for sure. In the mean time I can always see some more of Mark's pieces when I visit him at home, because we are good friends after all.

Sometimes I think it is funny that we are such good friends. Others have also said this to me. Maybe that's because we both make jewellery largely from discarded plastics. There certainly is some similarity in our work and some crossover at times. But for the most part I think we use different materials, our aims can be quite different and so are our processes. Still, do we ever get jealous of eachother? My mind seems to have wondered to this topic for some reason. I started to answer it here but I've decided it is a bigger topic best left for the next blog post.

I'm Not A Regular Market Girl

Today is the deadline to pay for the next SBYDM. After doing one last month, and one last year, I've decided to decline the offer. I don't plan to do any more of these markets. They just don't suit me. I gave it a go, and think it is a fantastic market for a lot of people, I just don't happen to be one of them. I'll support it by attending from now on.

This decision was based on asking myself a few questions. I thought about the type of work I make, where my practice is right now and where I want it to go. It is important to know who you are in terms of your practice/business, and to ask yourself these types of questions every now and again. You'll end up making better decisions that way. Don't worry if you make a few 'mistakes' along the way, because these are important too. I've always learn't more from my 'mistakes' than from my successes.

I'm also dropping MySpace. Great for bands. Not great for me. I'm seeing the potential in Twitter at the moment. But who knows if I end up keeping it for the long haul? I'll assess that in a few more weeks.

Big Business Is Bad, But What About That Local Designer?

I've steered clear of the whole copycat issue for a while. Frankly because it upsets me. I haven't enjoyed seeing numerous 'versions' of my designs. So I've just taken to ignoring it, perhaps giving into the 'what can you do about it?'/'ideas float' attitude. It all seemed a bit hard, and a whole lot unpleasant. But I'm thinking now that attitude is wrong. You shouldn't be OK with it. Sometimes you do have original ideas/designs, and why shouldn't you try to protect them?

Via Twitter I have seen a whole lot of designers being copied by big business,and a whole lot of people being outraged over it, for example. Which of course is right. It is outrageous and they should cease immediately.

All this has got me to thinking about what we, as a community, can do about it. Also unfortunately, to the sometimes double standard within our community. The design I've seen copied are illustrations and therefore more easily identifiable as copies. Craft/design/and plain good ideas, admittedly are less so. But It does seem that you are allowed to say something when big business copies, but not so much when another designer/crafts person copies. I think this in effect makes it a lot harder to fight the mass produced copies. If we can't even respect each others original ideas?

The Internet can be a minefield. It is an easy way to view and copy designs. The flipside is that is an easy way to prove when you created a design. Images loaded to Flickr, for example, are dated.

This is what I would like to see happen to reduce copying.

1. Not knowing is not an excuse. Take some responsibility and do some research.

2. Craft and design blogs/organisations/shops that elevate craft should not at the same time undermine craft/design by promoting obvious copies, or by providing tutorials of obvious copies. Again refer to step 1.

3. Say something about it when you see it. Be polite, because there is no need not to be. I know this is dicey because you may be wrong. Maybe they are the original maker, or maybe your idea of what is a copy is not their one (or a lot of other peoples'), but what is the alternative? Say nothing? Doesn't this condone copying, and in effect makes it harder for everyone to protect their original work?

This image is the only clue you get right now. Sorry, I know I am being unusually secretive. Very unlike me because usually I spill the beans as soon as I have a new idea. This time I've decided to wait and get it all together first.

What I can tell you now, is that the new designs, along with the planned launch are all about the things I believe in most. This includes creating pieces and that are interesting and fun and a DIY approach to all things (maybe with just a little help from my friends).

I'm Such a Sucker For a Hair Thingamebob

A quick mention that Daneve of Chicuff is running a competition. I stopped by there yesterday in my effort to visit more blogs and show a little more support to those that support me. I have to admit I have bit a bit blog slack for quite some time. There are just so many blogs these days that I have often found the thought of visiting them a little overwhelming. Where to start? Of course I decided to start with the people that have supported me (and there are lots of you) would be best. Already I have learnt so much, which of course is the other great reason to visit blogs!

I love the Chicuff motto 'Don't discard it...have fun & be CREATIVE!' Also I learnt this, from her blog, about her designs 'Chicuff by Daneve' is unique, wearable art transformed from Recycled Environmental "Green" bags. My items use materials that have come to its end as a product. Its "used by date" has expired and can no longer be used in the desired way any more. Behind my creations there is also an element of rescue. It seems a shame to discard something that was once useful and can still be useful if recycled. There is an idea of transformation, something that is old becoming new again. Each piece is individual with a unique past, present & future story of its own.
I'd say we have more than a few things in common.

Anyway back to the competition! As much as I would LOVE TO WIN the gorgeous headband pictured above, and sharing this competion will no doubt deminish my chances, I think it is only fair that I share. Go here to win!

Do You Think I Look Like Cher?

As many of you it has been Doppleganger Week on Facebook. I don't always join in these type of things, but since all my friends were doing it, I thought why not!

For years and years and year I've often been told that I look like Cher. I have to admit that this comparison never filled me with any delight. But I guess I always knew there was some truth in it. Anyway I'm not twenty anymore so I can laugh at myself quite easily these days. Besides Cher is talented (some may debate this), an icon (gay but everyone knows they have the best taste), and looks amazing for her age (she had a little help, but who couldn't do with a little).

What do you think? Do I look like Cher?

Ready for 2010!

Welcome 2010! The kids are back at school, and I feel rested and on top of things (well, for now at least), so I'm more than ready to kick of the year. Actually I feel excited about it and am looking forward to creating new work and stretching myself creatively this year. I hope you all had a great holiday and are feeling inspired too.

In amongst my giant to do list I thought I would start this week with an etsy makeover. I've changed the banner, some of the wording and have started to photograph everything in a consistent manner. I am aiming to create a look that is interesting, unique, fun and really reflect me and my work. I think the shop has been a little here and there in the past.

The photography for my etsy listings will be different. I've added a textured background and some colour (like the picture above), which I think works better for etsy. Perhaps that is because you need to draw customers in with a small image. For my media photos I will most often use a white background. I sometimes do find that a bit boring, but this is what is generally required, and you do need to have some of these.

I hope to have my etsy shop looking fab by next week. You are welcome to view my progress so far and offer me any advice. I'd appreciate that.

P.S there is a $20 earrings sale ending this weekend. After that the earrings, along with the other pieces, will be rephotographed and relisted.

MoB Workspace LAST Studio Sale

My lovely studio for the last five years, situated in Brisbane's City Hall, will soon be no more. City Hall will be undergoing extensive renovations for the next three years, hence our studio will close for this time too. It is all still a bit unclear if we will be relocated, and if that happens, when. Plus you never know what may change in three years time. So I'm feeling a little sad, very grateful for my time there, and a bit apprehensive, but excited about the future possibilities.

To mark the end (for now?) of our MoB studio, we are having one last studio sale. Plus we will be having drinks in the studio Friday and Saturday afternoon. We would love you to pop in and say farewell with us!

New Resin Jewellery

Making resin jewellery is something I have been wanting to try for years. It is also something that I have resisted trying for years. That is due to my mixed feelings towards it.

I've said something about the reason I wanted to try it here. I am interested in all plastics, so I feel it is important to try as many different types, even if I don't end up using them in the long run.

I guess the reasons I haven't wanted to use resin are just because there is so much resin jewellery already out there, and I try to do something a little different and keep my work as original as possible. Also it isn't a lovely material to work with. Although I do love the versitility of it (moulding, embedding, etc).

Saying all that, I have made a number of pieces of jewellery using resin, which I feel fit well with my other collections. This is because I have incorporated materials that I have used before (tape measures, vintage nana beads), and made several moulds from my vintage collections (beehive buttons, Kewpie dolls).

I'm sure how much resin will continue to feature in my designs, but I am happy that I have given it a go finally and am overall very happy with the results.

Several designs have been added to my webshop , and i'll add more soon.

Ice Cream Jewellery

Tomorrow night, if you don't already know I'm having a show at Movenpick South Bank . I'm excited about it because ice cream and my jewellery do seem like such a great match. Lollies...Tupperware...ice cream...it always seems to be something food related. Well I guess when all the jewellery you make looks edible, that's what happens!

Tomorrow night, along with all the delicious Movenpick ice cream, I'll be launching a new jewellery range. I'll be incorporating many of the materials I already use, and some of the things I love most. I'll be mixing vintage beads, buttons, kewpie dolls images, and tape measures, with hand moulded resin pieces.

Resin is something that I have been wanting to try for quiet some time. As you may remember my Father was a jeweller. My very first jewellery memory was of him making brightly coloured resin brooches in the room next to my bedroom (obviously OHS wasn't such an issue than!).

I know many of you are coming along to the event. For those of you who are just too far away I'll be posting up lots of images soon.

As mentioned below, I decided to give the Young Designer's Market a go last Sunday. I was equally nervous and excited as I drove off to South Bank at 7.30am. Nervous about trying something new. Probably excited for the same reason. But also excited at the opportunity selling at a market allows for meeting new people. something that doesn't happen when you work alone at home. Seeing a couple of familiar faces is always nice too, so thank you to friends and fans (always a little embarrassing to say that), who made their way down and said hi.

Since I'd never visited the market before I wasn't really sure how the day was going to pan out, and if in fact I thought it was a good market to be a part of. So my expectations weren't really that high. Also my goal weren't that high, I wasn't expecting to sell too much, and was looking at it as more of a marketing exercise. It was the end of school holidays after all.

After spending the day there I'd have to give YDM the thumbs up. I thought the market was lovely and had a great atmosphere. I felt completely comfortable there. Also it didn't hurt that I sold well, and got a lot of new people signing up for my mailing list.

My only regret for the day was that I didn't get the chance to walk the length of the market and look through all the other stalls. Guess I'll have to do the market again come November.

South Bank Young Designers Market Oct 4

October 4 I'll be at Southbank's Young Designers market for the first time. The market features a range of fashion and accessories, jewellery, homewares and arts by Brisbane's upcoming designers.

I do love to do a market. I used to do them regularly way back when I was living in Sydney. Every weekend I would go along to The Rock's markets and sell my wears. I did enjoy this, but honestly spending all week making and then spending all weekend, every weekend (expect for those weeks when I had pneumonia. Oh and the weekend I took off after giving birth) eventually took there toll! But I always though that a now and again, quality market, would be lovely to do. It'll gives me a chance to try out new designs and get an immediate response (hope to preview a few new pieces this Sunday!), meet new people, and offer some specials, which I can't always do.

So I'm giving the Young designer's market a go. I've heard good things so I'm looking forward to seeing how it goes.

Oh What a Month September Is

Today is my youngest daughter's 12th Birthday. A significant event. This September also marks several other significant events for me. It marks two years since I separated from my now ex-husband. It also, on a happier note, marks one year of a new relationship. So I guess I'm saying life has been a bit topsy turvy of late. Now that those major life events have had their anniversaries, I feel they can be put in there place and I can more happily get on with it.

Since my business and my life are so closely tied together, the changes in my personal life have affected my business. For the most part it has been business as usual. Orders come in, and orders go out. The area I feel it has affected, is my drive. I've mostly let things come to me rather than creating new opportunities. Luckily I had worked super hard previously, and had enough things in place for many, many opportunities to come to me. I won't say that I didn't do anything to expand my business, it's just that I probably would have done more.

Luckily I now feel stronger and more motivated than ever. I'm excited about my business, and my creativity, and the about the future for both. I know that life is messy, and bumps in the road are part of it. So I accept at times I might not be able to do things as brilliantly, or as quickly as I'd like to, but because I truly love what I do I know I'll get there soon enough.

Brisbane fashion label Nelson Molloy is certainly one to follow. After loving their designs for several years it was truly exciting to be invited to stock them with my own jewellery designs.

Oh I'm excited because I just received my copy of the new plastic jewellery design book, published by Lark, in today's post. Plastic jewellery really is my passion so I am more than happy to be a part of this book. Two of my designs, Knitwit bangles and a Knitwit Necklace are featured. There are many amazing designs that I can't wait to pore over.

The book is to be released next month, and is sure to be available at most book stores.

Love Knots

Making jewellery out of recognizable recycled materials, such as my knitting needle bangles, is something I truly love to do. But even more than that, I love to make jewellery out of the scraps. When you aren't quite sure what the materials were originally. Making something lovely from the remnants is what I love best.

At the moment I am enjoying making Love Knots. Pictured above, are a range of new rings made from the middles of vintage knitting needles. I have a box full of these pieces left over from years of making earrings and necklaces from knitting needle tops and tips. The colours and plastics are so lovely that I couldn't bare to throw them away (not that I am one for throwing much away!).I expected the right idea would come along eventually. I think it has! There are also earrings and necklaces in the making, which I am equally excited about, and will show you here soon.

Tokyo Pop-Up

I just sent a bundle of jewellery to Tokyo today, which I'm terribly excited about. I've often thought that my designs may be a good match for Japan (the colour, the quirkiness). So it was wonderful when I was given the opportunity to give it a try.

Several months ago a Japanese company contacted me regarding buying my pieces to sell in an eco pop-up store they were setting up. After a whole bunch of emails and discussions, on there side, it was finally all systems go a couple of weeks ago. So having worked like a demon and having got the work in the post in record time I'll now pretty interested to see how it goes.

The store will be up and running in Tokyo next month. I am hoping to get a few images, which I'll post here as soon as I do.

Shop Update

I suspect things may be a little quieter from now until the end of the financial year. So I'm taking some time to give my webshop a much needed makeover. I've never really been 100% happy with my webshops. Previously I've had a website shop on my website, that I built, which really involved a lot of work to keep updated. Time that I didn't often seem to have, so hence it didn't often get updated! Plus I had an Etsy shop. Also I started working on a Big Cartel shop so I could have a simple shopping cart in AU dollars as well as an Etsy shop in US dollars. Well, all that was getting a bit much to manage. Plus I thought it was getting too confusing for the customer.

So, for now, I've decided to focus on one shop, my Etsy one, and see how that goes. I'm aiming to build it up to a hundred, or so, pieces. Forty two so far! Plus working on better photography, displays, descriptions, marketing, and adding the prices and more options for Australian, as well as International customers. Phew, that's a lot to do, but I'm enjoying doing it.

I'm probably still am not 100% happy with my webshop (wished etsy had a currency converter!), but I am happier. I'm enjoying having just one shop to focus on.

Although the real down side on spending so much more time on Etsy, building my shop, is that I'm finding so many wonderful things I would love to buy! Perhaps I better sell a bit more first!

Evolution of a Brooch

1. Found bright pink rope. Thought I'll use that one day. Liked the colour, it was cheap, good texture, and was in great condition.

2. Experimented with melting the rope. Plan was to melt pieces of it completely.

3. While melting realised the texture was great and worth keeping. Liked it looking like rope. Kept experimenting and found a way to make it stiff, while keeping the appearance of rope.

4. Made some samples. Wanted to make a chain.

5. Worked on making the pieces look more finished.

6. Needed a few pieces to exhibit (will talk about this in the next post) so thought a few samples would be good to show.

7. Started layering pieces and realised they would make great brooches. Plus three of these would look good as a group.

8. Made three finished brooches as shown above.

9. Will now keep experimenting with other types rope, and other forms of jewellery.

10. Want to finish that chain.

Commission Piece FOR LK

When LK (aka Leanne Kelly) asked me to make a necklace for her I felt in two minds about it. I don't really like to make commission pieces. Unless they are a simple variation of a current design, like a different size or colour. That sort of thing. But on the other hand I do like a challenge, and I do like Leanne. She is a fan of my designs and my designs suit her, absolutely they do. Anyway when she found two pairs of fabulous thick knitting needles in Melbourne (one of her favourite places, and mine!) in just the colours she wanted, it was all systems go.

As much as I was reluctant I feel the piece turned out well. She loves it, and so do I. I realised through this process, that my problem with commissions was more about a fear of not making exactly what the client wanted. But I realised that when someone comes to you they are probably coming to you for a reason. They like what you do and they want a version of that. Now that I understand that I welcome commissions with arms a little more open.

New Brooches!

Here are the first pics of my new brooch design. I do seem to have a bit of a thing for a flower brooch, as I have designed a few over the years. These are currently my favourite. I wanted to make some brooches that could be worn as a single, or as a group, and still look great. I think these do.

The brooches are made from some lovely plastic material scrap. After some experimentation with shaping the material to retain a petal shape, they seem to have really come together.

I'm a bit excited with my new design, but I'm even more excited because I am playing with some other new materials, with more new designs coming soon!

Oh Blogging!

Oh I haven't been blogging much lately! Why? Hmmmmm Just busy I guess. Well, that is true, but it certainly isn't the only reason, because that sure isn't anything new. Hmmmm I think the core of it is that I've been spending much of my online time on Facebook.

Being always interested in how these online things work, particularly for business, I just tend to become a bit obsessed until I come to some kind of understanding about it all. I don't try to do that, it just happens. Also honestly it can be a little tricky juggling all those balls in the air - Facebook, website, etsy, blog, MySpace, and Twitter (haven't really started with that yet - but I will!).

Anyway I've decided Facebook is certainly excellent for networking, and networking is central to business success. Since one of my favourite things is meeting new people I find this aspect enjoyable. Also it has helped me get over my shyness. Maybe I don't appear shy but it really wasn't that long ago that I wouldn't have my photograph taken, less alone put one online for all the world to see! Being shy certainly isn't good for business. You have to put yourself out there, again and again! You just do.

Now that I've come to some understanding about the Facebook thing I think I'll move on to something else. I haven't really worked out how to make MySpace work fully for me and that Twitter thing? Or maybe I'll just get into blogging again more regularly. Sometimes I want to go on a bit, and let's face it, Facebook just isn't the place for that!

Facebook Business Page v's Group Page

A sudden rush of enthusiasm led me to set up a Facebook business Page last night. Well actually firstly I set up a group, invited 200 people to join, and then promptly decided a page would be far better - DOH!. The thing is I guess I just didn't really understand the difference between the two, and it was only through setting up the group that I quickly worked it out.

On retrospect of course it would have been better if I had set up the perfect page that I was perfectly happy with first, and then invited people to join! But I guess I do tend to operate in this way. I try things, I change things, I make mistakes, and I don't mind admitting it when I do. I'm always willing to learn a better way and try something else. Not perfect, but not too bad too! Anyway, It has got me this far.

p.s I've added a fan folder, so if you have any pics of you wearing my jewellery you are most welcome to add them. In fact, I'd love you to!

Just Because Not Enough Things Are Pink!

I've started a few little experiments. There are a few things I've been wanting to get around to for ages. But you know how it can go, there always seems to be something more important to do and sometimes these things just get put on the back burner. Also experimenting takes time, and money, and when you you run a business you can't always afford to spend a lot of time doing these things. I do also think that you can't afford not to. It is important to stay fresh, come up with something new, and to have fun. Lots of fun! That just makes your work better, and you work better too.

At the moment I'm experimenting with dyeing various plastics, because frankly, not enough things I make come in pink!

Makeover

It feels like it's time for a makeover! I'll be taking a good look at my business over the coming weeks and am planning to make some changes. Some big and some small. I'll be looking at my website, online shops, blog, flickr, newsletter, designs, customers, and all the other things that make up the elements of running a successful business.

I've decided not to feel overwhelmed by this apparently mammoth task. Instead I'll be taking my vitamins, drinking lots of water, and starting with one piece at a time. I think I'll start here! Blog overhaul will be task no. one...

Many people have been helping out those affected by the recent Victorian Bushfires. As in life every little bit counts, and can all add up to something significant.

One example of this is the OzBushfireAppeal etsy shop which has seen a few local girls putting their heads together and coming up with a way to help. Australian etsy sellers have been donating items to the shop and many wonderful people have supported this by buying them. Having reached over 500 sales, several thousand dollars have already been raised. All funds go the Australian Red Cross. Please check out the shop and support it if you can.

Roller Derby Girl

I am so making roller derby our family sport. That's what I have been telling my girls for a while now. I'm probably not that keen to play, or to have them play, but I am super keen to go to a bout. This keen interest has increased since listening to a roller derby girl, aka Evil Doll, talk at Wednesday night's Pecha Kucha. I found her inspiring. She obviously loved what she did, but also had a real enthusiasm and commitment to giving back local communities. It was also to the sport's apparent inclusiveness that I responded to. It seems like they'll welcome all women.

I went on a little road trip yesterday on the hunt for supplies. Some days you score, and some day you don't. That's just the way it goes. Yesterday was one of those rare days when I found more than I had hoped for! It is great when this happens, and it is a nice balance for all the time spent looking with little success. I think I sometimes forget how much time this side of things can take.

Rebranding Me

I needed a change. Well, it was probably more a case of feeling really ready for one. So yesterday I started the rebranding thing with my new website opening page. I just felt like I couldn't look at that little girl face anymore. It no longer feel like that image reflected my work and the direction I'm moving in. I just don't feel cute anymore! So I expect I'll be a little less cute this year as I become a little more grownup (although I still love pink things and kewpie dolls - that's not going to change!).

Perhaps this all has something to do with turning fourty in a few weeks time? Or perhaps not? But whatever it is it feels right, and I expect the rest of the changes will just unfold throughout the year. I'm excited, and again definitely ready!

Crafty Me

The love of making things can lead to a career in making things. That career in making things can, at times, kill off, or at least dampen, a love of making things.

This does happen to me, and it is probably true that I don't often feel like making much more than jewellery. But perhaps I felt a little rested after the holidays and thus had a sudden enthusiasm for being crafty. So last night I made the jewellery displays (pictured above) from frames I had picked up from Ikea and some plastic mesh from Reverse Garbage.

Now my vintage collection is all organised and pretty. I don't know when I'll feel like making something again, that isn't jewellery (OK I did make something jewellery related!),but it was nice, and was a reminder about the pure joy, and lovely sense of achievement, you get from making something with your own hands. Sometimes, because making has become my business, I forget this.

It was a nice surprised to find my Knitwit bangle featured on Etsy's blog this morning. I do admit to having wondered if admin will ever notice me over there. There are so many sellers and many with really great products. Now I'll just wait until I get a featured seller spot. I'm hopeful.

Anyway I do think you just have to stick with something (and love it!), be consistent, and the rest will just happen in time. Having fingers in lots of pies helps too. That helps with feeling patient because if one thing isn't paying off, something else probably is. Like dating, it's a bit of a numbers game.

A Little Smile

My mother emailed this photo yesterday. It is a photo of my Uncle Rudi holding the bag that my parents and daughter left behind at Hamburg train station as they raced to catch another train.

It just makes me laugh. It makes me remember my own trip to Germany when I was a teenager. So maybe it is the thoughts of travel and the hope that I'll be able to pull that off this year, that I like so much. Or maybe it is my Uncle's puppy dog expression. Or maybe it is that cute, colourful plastic bag. But whatever it is, anything that can bring a smile to my face is well worth keeping.

Last year was tricky. It was good, bad, and everything in between. But at the end of it I know that I wouldn't change any of it.

I know myself now, and for the most part, I rather like me. Maybe that isn't the thing to say, but then again I'm not really one for always saying the right thing. Anyway I do believe a healthy dose of self-esteem is good for us all. So I'll make that my wish for 2009. For me and for you. Good things tend to come when we feel good about ourselves. Or maybe we just tend to notice them a little more.

Great Expectations

Do you aim high and risk disappointment? Or do you aim low in the hope that you may be pleasantly surprised?

My tendency in the past has been to aim low. My tendency in recent years is to aim high. In this way I can at least feel like I have giving it a go regardless of the outcome. Although having been a devote of both practices I'd say now that aiming high is the way to go, for me anyway. You tend to push yourself more, expect more for yourself, and end up achieving more than you had expected. It doesn't tend to happen in a straight line though. You fail. You get knocked back. You feel disappointed. But you tend to get better at bouncing back and trying again. The more you achieve the more you know you can achieve.

Just a quick note to let you know that I have rejoined the world! The online world that is. After the frightening storms we have had recently I lost my Internet connection for over a week. I felt like a tiny island disconnected from the mainland. Anyway I'm back online, and can see I have a bit of catching up to do. So I better get to it!

I did keep myself busy while stranded in the real world by making jewellery. Pictured above are new Scoop Earrings.

Mark Vaarwerk Retrospective

Mark Vaarwerk is my favourite jeweller. He is talented, innovative, kinda brilliant, works with my favourite material (plastic of course!), a colleague, and one of my best friends.

Mark's first solo show. I wish I could go! Maybe you can, and if you can, I hope you do! Since I can't, I'll go have a beer with him this afternoon in celebration of such a fantastic achievement. Love you Mark!

Making plastic Jewellery

I came home recently to find this book on my doorstep. There are a couple of my images used in the gallery section, which of course is very nice to see.

It was also great to see a book all about plastic and resin jewellery. I know when I started working with plastics exclusively I found it a little difficult to find information regarding techniques. Through months of research I had gathered a book on making resin jewellery, some old high school textbooks on working with plastics (mostly acrylic), a bit of info in various other books and online. But for the most part I just worked it out myself. Which was probably the best way to do it anyway. Trial and error takes you into those unexpected places. At times you want to hit your head against the wall repeatedly in frustration. At other times you want to jump for joy in the fact that you found your own way and created something truly unique.

It really is a lot like me, reflects my feeling towards Tupperware, and why I love it as a material. It's the colour. It's the fun. And it's modern, but a little bit retro too.

Take a ball of thread…
a jewellery project by Melinda Young
opens at Pablo Fanque tomorrow. If I was in Sydney I'd be there in a flash, for sure!

Melinda has created a really awe-inspiring collection of pink jewellery (oh so my favourite kind!) from a simple and brilliant idea. As she states at the beginning of her project, The plan is to use this entire ball of pink thread I found to make a series of new jewellery pieces .

Not only are the end result and concept fabulous, but so is the fact that Melinda has documented the entire process. Such insight into the creative process, although more common now with the proliferation of blogs/websites, can still unfortunately be hard to come by. Knowing how/why something was made adds so much to the experience of viewing/understand the work, and as importantly, the person behind the work. More of it I say!

Just a quick update for why it has been so long between posts. I usually am a little more regular than this, but life has just gotten in the way a bit too much lately. It has been darn fun and chaotic too. My parents were staying with me for the past two months so consequently I went out A LOT! Hey Mum nothing again you and Dad it was great, and greatly appreciated, but...

Now my parents have safely returned to Sydney Town I'll have to get back on track with work. And there is lots too do as Christmas is rapidly approaching! Anyway better go now and get a start on all that...

Mother/Daughter

Looking through my daughter's sketchbook last night I was draw to this image. I just loved it. It was something in the expression. The eyes perhaps.

I asked her what it was about. Why she had drawn it? Why was there a broken heart? And the lantern? But she just looked at me, and said Mum, I'm 12, I just think it looked cool. Fair enough I thought, because I agreed.

Perhaps a mother/daughter exhibition is looming somewhere in our futures.

Supplying Promotion

It was a nice surprise to see my earrings image had been used on the new KickArts Shop flyer. It was also a good reminder that getting this sort of promotion from your suppliers is not that hard. They are often in need of good images for their websites, invitations, catalogues, advertising, etc, and if you give them some of those good images easily, there is a good chance that they will use them in some way or other.

I don't do this often enough but sending a disk of new images with your work ever now and again can really pay off, and if it doesn't what has it cost you anyway?

Jane Pollard On Sale

The lovely Jane Pollard sent me this invite to her studio sale, which is happening this Friday! I thought I would share it with you not only because Jane and her jewellery are fabulous, but her studio is gorgeous too, and this will be the last chance to see it. Also I recommend going to the bathroom, even if you don't have to, just because it is super cute and worth taking a peak at!

Facebook Revisited

I blogged about Facebook earlier in the year, and now I am doing it again. Looking back to what I wrote previously it seems that my opinion has changed. Before it seemed that I thought it was a good way to keep in contact with others (an opinion I still have), but now I am realising it has far more potential for making contact with others. I know I'm spending far too much time on it at the moment but that is because I'm just so enthused and eager to learn how I can make it work for me. I enjoy the marketing aspect of this business and Facebook (and probably My Space) appears to be such a fun way of doing just that!

Artist statement:
Drip Drop earrings and neckpieces came out of a time of deep change and renewal for me. Like water, I am transforming. Change is an inevitable part of life, but at this time it is highly concentrated. The neckpieces and earrings are made from old necklaces rescued from thrift stores. They are joined with vintage buttons, stainless steel, and sterling silver. The old and the new are combined, and through this something better, I hope, is made.

Making Money & Making Art

Things are a little quiet. Up until the last few weeks I haven't really stopped. Not that I have stopped now. I have a large US order to fill, an exhibition piece to finish, and a couple of restocks due. But in comparison to how things have rolled along until now, it is a little quiet.

This is a good and bad thing. The bad is obvious (lack of income and all that), but I'd rather focus on the good. For the first time in soooo long I actually have time to design/make some new work, and I have to say that ideas are really starting to flow.

Finding a balance between making money and making art/craft/design or whatever, is tricky. I don't think these things are mutually exclusive, but you do have to develop some different skills. I believe that marketing and financial skills are just as important as artistic ability and vision. That is if you plan to be around for the long haul. I just hope that I can pull it off(?).

Memories of the Ekka - Museum of Brisbane
Since I didn't grow up in Brisbane I have no memories of the Ekka. I'm thinking it is a lot like the Royal Easter Show (same diff - right?), and I do have loads of fond memories of that yearly event. Regardless of the possible differences they are both pretty much about the cupie dolls and showbags for me.

Breast Cancer Exhibition

An exhibition and sale of scarves, wraps and contemporary neck pieces to raise funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation will with be held at Craft ACT in Canberra during August 2008.

On a personal level I do have breasts which I am rather fond of (a little too fond of, some might say) so I'm putting my hand up to donate a neckpiece for this exhibition. I also have daughters, and a mother, and many female friends. I know women who have been affected by breast cancer, and those that have died from it. I can't pretend that it doesn't exist, and I can't pretend that it hasn't touched my life, and will continue to.

Business and Friendship

The Umbrella Collective is no more. There will be one last show at KickArts in Cairns from August 5th -30th. That will be the last time we come together as a group.

The decision to disband was reached several weeks ago. As far as break-ups go it was a good one. We had all grown and changed since we first joined forces, and our practices were now moving in different directions. Our goals were no longer united, so splitting just seemed like the right thing to do, and it was. Still it was hard. I personally felt all the mixed emotions of being simultaneously sad and glad, and that it was a mature decision, and a failure as well.

Overall mixing business and friendship is tricky business. Great things can come of it, and problems as well. Being a member of groups such as the Umbrella Collective and MoB Workspace has taught me that. When contemplating mixing the two I would suggest questions really need to be asked beforehand. Such as, where is the line between business and friendship? What should you expect of a friend, and what should you expect of a business associate? The waters can get very muddy when you join the two, and unfortunately friendships can be damaged or lost, and business goals never truly achieved. Being part of groups can also give you some enormous benefits and opportunities, as they have for me, and I am truly grateful for that.

Making changes is difficult. I feel my work is at that point of change and it is a little stressful, and exciting too. Looking over my designs and picking the pieces that I really like, and want to wear, helps.

Bubblegum Shoes

I would do unspeakable things to own these shoes. Maybe that is a slight exaggeration, but still it is only a slight one! My current obsession is Melissa shoes - they're plastic, designer, smell like bubblegum, and oh so modern.

I had pangs of desire and simpatico when I first saw the Campana Brothers shoes several years ago. A couple of days ago, when I clinked on a link via Vogue magazine, the fires really started burning. I've since spent many hours exploring every page of the website, searched through dozens of blog entries, found website shops, looked at images of people wearing Melissa shoes via Flickr, found many other interesting online references, and still haven't had my fill!

All this shoe lust has been fun, but also completely work related. It has left me wondering what makes a product 'must-have'? There is a secret formula, I'm sure of it! I may have to continue the research...

Evolution

necklace made today

Last week I knew that things would change. I had just layed out and priced my work for the studio sale. There were at least a dozen different designs of earrings, necklaces, brooches and even the odd ring. The jewellery came in bright plasticy colours made from my trademark materials, such as Tupperware, tape measures and knitting needles. There was certainly a lot to choose from. As I stood looking at it all I knew that my work would not stay this way for much longer. It wasn't a conscious decision, but it did feel like a certain one.

I'm not sure what I mean by this exactly. It was more of a feeling. I guess I know that I will be refining my work and many pieces will no longer be made, or will be reworked in some way. I don't expect the work will be completely different, but it will be different. I don't know when the evolution will end, but I feel it has started. I'm in no rush for change, although the change seems inevitable, and I welcome it.

Maybe this has a lot to do with my own changes, as my work is very much a reflection of myself. It is, and I hope always will be, true to me.

Pecha Kucha

I went along to Pecha Kucha last night and loved it. It is on every month at the Brisbane Powerhouse and will definitely be a regular date in my diary from now on.

Pecha Kucha really is a kind of show and tell for adults. A cross section of creatives show and discuss 20 slides for 20 seconds each. With the talk being over in 6 minutes and 40 seconds there is just no chance to get bored!

It feels important to me right now to engage with my community and become a part of it. Also I want to see what others in a range of related industries are doing. I find that really inspiring. I left last night feeling inspired.

These events are happening in major cities worldwide so check them out if you can. It is worth a look.

Maybe one day I'll put my hand up to present one too. Maybe.
