My studio is located in Brisbane, Australia. For the past 10 years I’ve been enjoying creating jewellery designs from an array of mundane materials. Tupperware and knitting needles have remained a firm favourite. My designs have been published numerous times, graced the shelves of many wonderful galleries and stores and been worn by those whose aren’t afraid of colour and attention. All of which I am very grateful for. For several years I’ve also been fortunate enough to work with many businesses as a coach and workshop facilitator.

Snap

I need a camera! Actually, I find it pretty amazing that I have gotten away with using a crappy $100 Kodak camera for this long. Said crappy camera used to take the above image & the floral brooch on this book cover.

Being pretty brand loyal I want a Canon, having owned a couple of their SLR's in the past. I still have the lenses (and cameras!) so I'm thinking a digital SLR is the way to go. Perhaps this one? Any thoughts, experiences, opinions?

I probably have a pretty decent eye for colour and composition, but this can only get you so far. It seems well and truly time that I purchased some better equipment. Otherwise I may miss out on future publishing opportunities, and I just can't let that happen!

I'm a big fan of digital SLRs and have had a couple of Canon dSLRs.

Fortunately, Canon's product lineup is simple, the more you spend the better you get (features, resolution, etc.). However, their entry level dSLR, the 400d, is a great camera. They have just updated their entire line, so there is no risk of getting something that is about to replaced.

As far as your lenses, depending on how old they are, they may or may not work. Canon changed their lens mount to the EF mount in 1987. But any Canon auto-focus lens should be fine. But the real treat with switching to an SLR is quality lenses, so make sure your old lenses are decent.

As Shula mentioned above, get a macro lens or extension tubes to shoot closeup.

I've used Olympus digitals for years now, and really love them, very good lenses, excellent colour... but so many are excellent nowadays, I'm sure anything you choose would be good!

I have the Rebel XT from Canon, with original lens. I love it! It was wayyy far from free (lol!) but to me, it was worth it!!
I love macro photography, so my wish is to buy a macro lens shortly hopefully, but the original lens works fine for my basic and work needs! :)
