My studio is located in Brisbane, Australia. For the past 10 years I’ve been enjoying creating jewellery designs from an array of mundane materials. Tupperware and knitting needles have remained a firm favourite. My designs have been published numerous times, graced the shelves of many wonderful galleries and stores and been worn by those whose aren’t afraid of colour and attention. All of which I am very grateful for. For several years I’ve also been fortunate enough to work with many businesses as a coach and workshop facilitator.

What If I Didn't Make Things Anymore?

It is time for a change!

I've come to the point where I realise I need to make some changes. I expect this happens to lots of us. You feel like you have done it all before (and maybe lots of other people are now doing it too). Or you need to make changes simply to develop your career.

I care about learning. So when I feel I have learnt something, I want to learn something new. I am at that point of wanting to learn something new.

There are new challenges ahead. New way of doing business and new ways to be creative. I feel excited about this. I want to move in some of these new directions. In order for new beginning to happen something has to end. That is just the way it is. As you know letting go is hard, and scary. But if you want something new to happen I think you have to. I think I have to.

The details of my 'new directions' are still a little hazy. I'm not exactly sure what will end and what will begin? Mostly this won't happen until next year, but I am thinking about it now. I'm thinking about it a lot.

I do hope that you continue with making your fabulous jewellery but I completely understand where you are coming from too. I hope that you figure everything out easily and look forward to seeing where this new direction leads.

we are creative people and we are continually learning. doing the same thing just doesn't give you that high. so keep learning and venture into diff things all the time to keep creating in whatever you do. it is all part of the fun. good on you and i know how you feel. i go thru this often. xx

Good luck with your new directions - I think it's vital in life to keep moving and changing, and of course what you want to focus on and what you do will keep evolving. You're a creative intelligent person! :D

Thank you all! I don't think I will stop making jewellery completely (although you never know), rather I expect I will be more 'dramatic' in my approach and certainly less retail driven.

I agree it is important (vital even) to develop, change and keep learning. You are right Fiona, I'm looking for a new "high".

Hardcore retail when making by hand can be very difficult to sustain...you have managed it incredibly well. I look forward to the next thing!

Anna I know you can do anything you like! Thanks.

Yes I know I am not alone. You get to the point where you simply need new challenges. My job supporting women with their micro businesses provides much of that, but I do need new creative ones also.

True Caz it is hard to sustain. When you want to put your energy into other areas it is practically impossible, because you need so darn much of it! Thanks.

I can soooo relate to this post, and the conversation in the comments. I have been pondering these same things. What direction to take, how to put my art out into the world, the whole retail thing. And yes, it takes so much energy to bring new ideas and directions to life.

Wishing you well on your journey.
